James Hooper provides representation, counsel, advice, and guidance in all aspects of intellectual property law. For over a decade, James has prepared, prosecuted, and filed patent and trademark applications for clients operating in a range of diverse industries and sectors, and involving numerous types of technologies, innovations, and inventions.
As an experienced mechanical engineer and practicing lawyer, James has technical expertise and experience working with numerous mechanical systems and devices, such as medical devices, systems design and modeling, electromechanical inventions, information technology innovations, automated control systems, fluid process systems, oil and gas exploration, drilling, production, and offshore structures.
Prior to law school, James worked for Petroleum Geo-Services, where he helped develop an automated testing system for subsea fiber-optic components, which involved substantial systems design and modeling work. James also worked as an engineer for a leading petroleum company, where he worked on mechanical systems, root cause analysis, and turnarounds for facilities and equipment.
James also works closely with law firms and lawyers based outside of the United States (U.S.) to help secure intellectual property rights for their clients, prepare and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and navigate the USPTO’s requirements, deadlines, procedures, and processes.
He also practices in other areas of intellectual property law, including providing guidance and opinions on post-issuance proceedings, including Post-Grant Review proceedings before the USPTO; freedom-to-operate searching, analysis, and opinions; counseling, due diligence, and merger; and acquisition due diligence.
