Legal Practice

Ms. Bates is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and specializes in patent, trademark and copyright law.

Her patent practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications, primarily in the mechanical and electromechanical arts, and in technologies that range from oilfield tools to textile products to air conditioning systems.  Ms. Bates also assists clients in the identification, development and protection of patent portfolios.

Her trademark practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign trademark applications; conducting infringement investigations; preparing license agreements; inter partes opposition and cancellation proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board; and domain name dispute proceedings before the National Arbitration Forum and World Intellectual Property Organization.

Ms. Bates also has extensive experience in obtaining copyright registrations and preparing copyright license, work-for-hire and assignment agreements.

Ms. Bates previously worked as an engineer for Exxon Pipeline Company where she was responsible for the design and construction of liquid pipeline systems.
